About Us

At Hardy Gloves®, we believe that a good day’s work deserves the best protection for your hands. Since our founding in 1952, we’ve been committed to making work gloves that are tough, comfortable, and affordable for professionals across industries. Whether you’re a construction worker, mechanic, landscaper, or DIYer, we have the specialized Hardy gloves to suit your needs.

Our History

It all started with a simple idea from our founder, John Hardy – to make a work glove that was durable yet flexible, protective yet comfortable to wear all day long. John was a mechanic in Detroit who was frustrated with the stiff, inflexible work gloves available at the time. He began experimenting with glove designs and materials in his home garage after work.

After months of prototypes, John finally created the perfect glove using soft, flexible goatskin leather and a form-fitting pattern. The glove moved with the contours of the hand, yet was thick enough to protect against scrapes, cuts, and punctures. John brought his design to the major glove manufacturers in Detroit, but they weren’t interested in his innovative approach.

Not willing to give up, John leased a small warehouse space and launched his own company, Hardy Gloves, in 1952. At first, he sold his gloves locally to auto garages and factories. But word quickly spread about the comfort and durability of Hardy Gloves. Within a few years, John was selling nationwide and receiving bulk orders from large industrial companies.

Growth & Innovation

Throughout the 60s and 70s, Hardy Gloves continued expanding production while staying true to John’s vision of creating the highest quality work gloves. In the 1980s, John’s son Robert Hardy took over the business and led the push into new materials and modern manufacturing techniques.

Under Robert’s leadership, Hardy Gloves was an early pioneer in adopting nitrile coating for gloves. Nitrile provided greater chemical and puncture resistance than standard leather gloves. Robert also opened factories overseas to make Hardy Gloves more affordable for the mainstream consumer market.

In the 90s and 2000s, Hardy Gloves introduced new glove lines for cold weather protection, oil/gas drilling, electrical utility work, and other specialties. We also expanded our offerings to include models for hobbyists and DIYers under the Freight Hardy brand.

Today, Hardy Gloves remains family-owned and headquartered in Detroit. We operate factories domestically and abroad to produce over 150 types of specialty work gloves. While our production has grown, our dedication to quality and innovation remains unchanged. We still prototype and test new glove designs to meet the evolving needs of tradespeople.

Our Glove Materials

The material used to make gloves determines their durability, flexibility, breathability, and protection qualities. Over 70 years, we’ve researched and tested dozens of materials to create the ideal glove for every job. Some of the most common materials used in Hardy Gloves include:

  • Goatskin leather – The supple goatskin leather used in our original gloves is still valued today for its unbeatable comfort. It offers abrasion resistance while conforming to the hand for maximum dexterity.
  • Cowhide leather – Cowhide is thicker and more rugged than goatskin. It stands up to heavy duty work conditions where puncture protection is important. Hardy cowhide gloves maintain flexibility using molded contours.
  • Nitrile – With high puncture resistance, grip, and chemical protection, nitrile has become a staple material for Hardy Gloves. It repels oils and solvents, making it ideal for auto repair and chemical handling. We offer nitrile in various coating thicknesses measured in mils – the higher the mil rating, the thicker the coating.
  • Latex – Stretchy, breathable latex allows for precision work while keeping hands cool. Latex naturally adheres to surfaces for extra grip without sacrificing tactile feel. Our latex-dipped gloves provide lightweight maneuverability.
  • Polyurethane – This abrasion-resistant polymer coating is both flexible and oil-resistant. Polyurethane gives Hardy Gloves superior grip and long-lasting performance under harsh conditions.
  • Kevlar® – The ultra-strong Kevlar fiber makes gloves cut-resistant and flame-retardant. Hardy uses Kevlar to reinforce high-risk areas like the fingers and knuckles.
  • PVC – Waterproof and chemical-resistant polyvinyl chloride (PVC) excels in wet, oily environments. PVC takes on a leather-like texture when used in Hardy Gloves.

We carefully select the best material or blend of materials to create the ideal glove for every industry and work scenario. Our expertise comes from years of studying how gloves perform on the job.

Focus on Fit & Comfort

The right work glove must be comfortable all day long, allowing your hand to move and flex freely. An uncomfortable glove quickly becomes a safety hazard if it causes fatigue or impedes dexterity.

That’s why Hardy Gloves are designed for an optimal contoured fit:

  • Pre-curved fingers – Finger seams curve to match your natural grip, reducing hand tension.
  • Ergonomic palm – The form-fitting palm design moves with your hand without binding or bulging.
  • Flexible wrist – Elastic, neoprene, or adjustable closures ensure a secure but comfortable wrist fit.
  • Moisture-wicking linings – Breathable liners and ventilation panels keep hands cool and dry for longer wear.

We also offer gloves in multiple sizes, knowing that one size never fits all. A proper fitting glove enhances comfort and safety. Our sizing ranges from small to XXX-large to accommodate any hand size.

Safety First

While our original Hardy Glove protected hands from routine scrapes and cuts, today’s work hazards demand more specialized protection. That’s why we’ve engineered Hardy Gloves for nearly any dangerous situation, including:

  • Cut-resistant – Gloves reinforced with cut-resistant fibers shield against lacerations when using knives, sheet metal, glass, and other sharp objects.
  • Puncture-resistant – PVC, leather, and nitrile coatings provide puncture protection from nails, wire, shards, bites, and more.
  • Impact-resistant – Thick padded leather over the fingers, knuckles, and palms absorbs and deflects crushing blows.
  • Flame-retardant – Kevlar and other flame-retardant fabrics prevent burn injuries near heat and fire.
  • Insulated – For work in cold conditions, select Hardy Gloves feature 3M ThinsulateTM insulation to block cold and wind.
  • Electrical – Rubber insulating gloves protect against accidental electrical shocks up to 500V AC.
  • Chemical-resistant – Barriers like nitrile, PVC, and neoprene shield hands from harsh cleaners, oils, solvents, and chemicals.
  • Anti-vibration – Cushioning materials reduce vibration from power tools to prevent long-term damage.

We also make high visibility gloves with reflective stripes when hand protection overlaps with being seen on the job.

Our Manufacturing Process

We understand that to make a great glove consistently, you need stringent methodology in design, sourcing, production, and quality assurance. Hardy expends great resources to perfect manufacturing processes while actively seeking better practices. Our domestic and overseas factories embrace lean manufacturing principles by eliminating waste, optimizing material flow, and empowering line workers to take ownership of product quality.

Here is an overview of how Hardy Gloves progress from initial concept to finished product:

Research & Design

All new Hardy Glove designs start by researching customer needs and emerging work hazards. We analyze glove usage across industries and observe pain points that impact hand safety or fatigue. Our designers sketch preliminary concepts focused on better fit, finger dexterity, breathability, moisture wicking, and other priority improvements. We collaborate with material suppliers to engineer fabrics that enhance grip, cut resistance, insulation, or other properties. Prototypes are created and tested for real-world feedback. Only designs that truly advance worker hand protection and comfort move forward.

Raw Material Sourcing

The right advanced materials make all the difference in glove performance. Hardy sources leathers, fabrics, coatings, and components globally based on quality, capabilities, and ethical sourcing practices. We require suppliers to meet stringent acceptance criteria and work collaboratively with our engineers. By controlling raw materials at the source, we can ensure their composition and properties. Hardy also experiments with innovative emerging materials to foster new design possibilities.

Pattern Making

A glove pattern is like a dress pattern – it cuts and sews the raw material into the 3D shape. Hardy employs master pattern makers who analyze how glove materials drape, stretch, and align. Through iterations of trial and error, they create the custom patterns for each new glove design. The pattern accounts for variables like finger contours, seam placement, stitch angles, and grain direction. This expertise ensures optimal flexibility, durability, and comfort.

Cutting & Sewing

Glove fabric and components are carefully cut either by automated die cutters or skilled manual operators. Cutting must precisely align the pattern for minimal waste. Sewing operators then assemble the cut parts with optimized stitching to join seams smoothly. Top performers can sew up to 30+ gloves per hour. Consistent quality relies on their mastery plus oversight by production and quality teams.

Coatings & Finishing

Many Hardy Gloves receive an additional coating like nitrile, latex, or polyurethane for grip and protection. Through dipping or spray techniques, we control the coating thickness and uniformity. Other finishing steps include adding logos, tags, elastic wrists, and reinforced finger holes. We examine every detail at this stage to catch any imperfections before the gloves cure and set.

Quality Assurance

Finished gloves undergo final QA where workers check for proper construction, seam strength, coating adhesion, sizing consistency, and other metrics. Gloves must pass visual examinations plus physical testing. Defective gloves get flagged for rework or rejection before they reach our customers. We thoroughly vet new factories and conduct ongoing audits to instill Hardy’s high-quality culture.

Our customers rely on Hardy Gloves being durable, protective, and comfortable straight out of the package. We take pride in the craftsmanship that goes into perfecting our manufacturing process.
